This book examines several key aspects of the relationship between ethnicity and education in Western Europe. Along with the rise of immigration in countries such as Belgium, Great Britain, France, Germany and the Netherlands, questions emerge about ethnic division in West European education. The cross-national analysis of research literature that is presented here indicates remarkable differences in educational achievement between ethnic minority groups. In an attempt to understand underachievement, the author refers to three principle forms of inequality: migrant, class and ethnic stratification.
The book offers a few comments on the role of the European Community for improving educational oppurtunities of pupils from ethnic minorities, and particularly stresses the need for support of longitudinal cross-national research of the precise nature of ethnic stratification in education.
