Beschreibung

A George Grosz Montage. Collages 1917–1958 This publication, “A George Grosz Montage” will familiarize the broader general public with the abundance of material on George Grosz, which the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, has in its archive and art collection. It takes as its theme a key aspect of his œuvre and focuses on works in which Grosz used his special method of montage, collage and collected scraps. Thus it becomes clear that Grosz and Heartfield developed this technique during the Dada era by exchanging ideas. In the United States and after the Second World War, Grosz also stayed true to montage. He used the principle of montage as a way to overcome his frustration about developments in society, art and on the art market and was ultimately incited to defy this situation in a Dadaist style and return to making montages, be it on postcards to his friends or on a large scale. The publication presents unpublished material and works of George Grosz, photographs of Arnold Newman and Irving Penn and essays by George Grosz, Birgit Möckel, Klaus Staeck, and Wolfgang Trautwein. It consists of two parts: a 16-page English text booklet and a 112-page german hardcover (131 colour illustrations).
