The sheer amount and the value of products that must be treated by removal of a liquid –
usually water – makes drying to one of the most important industrial processes. The goal of
drying is to minimize cost – especially the energy consumption and the environmental
footprint – whereas preserving product quality. High-value products are often formulated by
means of processes that combine wetting with drying in a simultaneous or consecutive way.
Such processes require advanced equipment design and control. From the scientific point of
view, the material systems to be dried are multiphase and micro-structured. The processes to
be treated are multi-scale. This requires continuous development and innovation in both
simulation methods and precise, high-resolution experimental techniques.
Scientific challenge and practical value led early to the formation of a world-wide drying
community, which met for the first time in 1978 for a major scientific conference, following a
call by Prof. Arun S. Mujumdar (at that time Montreal, now Singapore). The conference was
given the name International Drying Symposium. It was so successful that it continued being
organized every second year at some other place of the globe. This is the background of the
present printed proceedings of the 17th International Drying Symposium (IDS2010), 3-6
October 2010, Magdeburg, Germany.
The ambition of the printed proceedings is to mark the temporary edge of drying science and
technology, and to – as far as possible – reflect the spirit of IDS2010. First, the manuscripts of
invited, keynote lectures are presented. Then, the scientific contributions of the conference
(oral and poster) are organized along topics, namely: Fundamentals, modeling, simulation,
Measurement and process control, Energy and environmental issues, Process intensification
and integration, Physical properties, product quality, Particle formulation by drying processes,
Industrial processes and equipment, Osmotic dehydration, mechanical dewatering, Drying of
wood, pulp and paper, Drying of food and agricultural materials, Drying of pharmaceuticals
and biomaterials and Drying of chemicals and polymers. All those manuscripts have
undergone peer review before acceptance. Publication and peer review without doubt serve
the goals of openness and scientific quality, but they may also inhibit communications from
industry. To avoid this undesired side-effect, 20 “Technical Contributions” from industry
have been accepted and presented orally at IDS2010. These contributions had not a full
manuscript and they are not part of the printed proceedings. However, some of them appear in
the CD-Proceedings of the conference in form of the respective presentation slides.
In countable items (number of participants and contributions) IDS2010 has probably been the
biggest event of the series since 1978. My hope is that it may also have been successful in
terms of things that can hardly be counted, such as the interaction of theory with practice, new
ideas, contacts and projects, and new friends. Many organizations and persons have tried their
best for such success, among them our sponsors, award sponsors and exhibitors, the
organizing and the scientific committee, DECHEMA and ProcessNet (Mrs. Urbanczyk, Mrs.
Weingärtner, Dr. Delfs and others, who took a significant part of work from our shoulders),
our reviewers and keynote lecturers, all colleagues who have served IDS2010 as chairpersons,
in award committees, in the open forum or otherwise, all persons who have contributed to the
opening ceremony, the closing ceremony, the cultural event and the conference dinner, the
staff of the venue hotel (MARITIM Hotel Magdeburg), my co-editors of these proceedings,
