The presented work is devoted to numerical modelling and investigating the dynamic characteristics of induction through-heaters for metal strip and slabs. Nowadays investigation of these installations is mainly concentrated on their operation in “quasi” steady-state modes. However, analysis of industrial practice shows that various kinds of transient processes in induction heating installations cover a significant portion of total operation time. Thus effectiveness of the installations is noticeably determined by their dynamic characteristics as well. Investigating the dynamic characteristic of induction through-heaters for metal strip and slabs are of especially high importance due to their high level of power and huge production rate. Numerical simulation is only way to fill up the gap because of any experimental approaches imply extremely high cost and time procedures with limited monitoring ability. For this purpose, a row of advanced algorithms to model the induction through-heaters in their transient operation has been developed. The algorithms are realized using specially developed three-dimensional numerical models with coupled electromagnetic and thermal analyses as well as the workpiece movement. The models have been built using the commercial package ANSYS based on the Finite-Element Method. The models have been created for both main concepts used for induction heating of strip and slabs: with longitudinal and with transverse magnetic flux.
