It is not surprising that the history of aviation and meteorology exhibit common ground and parallelism. Aviation and modern meteorology are both based on fluid mechanics. Air traffic benefits from weather prediction and the knowledge of the physics of the atmosphere. On the otherhand, aircraft are very a dvantageous instrument platforms for meteorological measurements. Aircraft are important tools for meteorology and applied in various ways in today’s and past atmospheric research (e.g. Lenschow,1986).
