The Scandinavian Defence, or ‘Centre Counter’ as it is also known, Begins with 1.e4 d5. Black immediately challenges the white centre on the very first move, not allowing White to set up a broad pawn centre as you see in some other openings. Black fights for the centre and develops his pieces rapidly, even at the cost of moving the queen around for a few moves. The Scandinavian has in my view received a dubious reputation, but I feel this is unjust. If anything, this can be used to our advantage- the opening is sound and there are many tricks and traps that the unsuspecting white player can fall into.
