Why do children who are raised in privileged social classes tend to stay in privileged social classes when they become adults, whereas children from underprivileged social classes tend to stay in underprivileged social classes in adulthood? The present research offers a fresh perspective on class reproduction, by examining expellees and refugees who lost most of their wealth and property. Among these expellees and refugees, material influences on social class and status attainment were greatly diminished. Studying these populations thus provides a unique estimation of non-material influences on the process of intergenerational social reproduction. The analysis reveals substantial non-material influences on the attainment of social class.
