It is widely believed that the increasing number of non-adaptive UDP-based applications in the Internet bear the risk of a global congestion collapse.
Based on this, the thesis investigates the sending behaviour of UDP-based streaming applications and develops methods for improving it without changing the applications itself. Two strategies are used to accomplish this: (a) adaptive applications are controlled by sending artificial feedback to the sender, and (b) congestion control is enforced by using traffic shaping techniques per data flow. The methods for traffic shaping vary according to the intended use - either in cooperative or in non-cooperative environments.
The techniques described in this thesis are evaluated in a number of simulations and experiments. They can be useful for Internet Service Providers to improve the adaptation behaviour of UDP-based applications, and thereby reduce the risk of a congestion collapse in their networks and the global Internet.
