Until today the First, not the Second World War is recognised in Britain as the Great War. The four years between 1914 and 1918 were meant to have been the great divide separating Victorian and Edwardian from modern Britain. This volume challenges this long established view. It disentangles the complex pattern of war-related change and inertia. It weighs long term developments against short term dirsruptions of British society, economy, culture and politics. It thereby offers a synthesis of recent research and broader issues
