Learning the signs is one thing. Reading them fluently is the real challenge. This workbook trains visual recognition of ASL number handshapes 1 through 9 using 118 easy Sudoku puzzles. Sudoku is especially well suited for this training: each puzzle requires active reasoning about which handshape is missing and where it belongs. This active recognition builds reading fluency beyond what flashcards and reference charts can achieve. No practice partner needed. All handshape illustrations were purpose-built to create a custom professional sign language font, validated by several independent, recognized sign language experts, including an expert from Gallaudet University. All signs are shown from the viewer's perspective: the way you actually see them in conversation. Optimized for recognition, not production. 30-point type, each puzzle on approximately two-thirds of an 8.5 x 11 inch page with space for annotations. Solutions on the following page spread. Includes complete Sudoku instructions and solving strategies, ASL numbers reference chart, ASL alphabet reference chart, and two bonus cut-out alphabet charts.
