The second volume in the GIDS analysis series of the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies (GIDS) presents another study on the military and strategy. In this volume, Kai-Alexander Hoberg addresses the current and highly controversial question of whether deterrence strategies can also be designed for cyberspace. He examines this new strategy problem, which is characteristic of the digital age, by working out which conditions must be fulfilled in order to prevent a state opponent of attacks on the information and communication technology infrastructure by threatening it with retaliatory attacks. To this end, he draws on the Perfect Deterrence Theory and at the same time questions several basic assumptions of widespread deterrence theories. Conclusions for the digital age are drawn from the development of deterrence theories.
