Aerosol Jet Printing

The two-layer seed and plate approach for solar cell metallization is an established concept in photovoltaic research. This concept allows to improve performance and to reduce manufacturing costs. Aerosol jet printing (AJP) is a very promising technology to produce the seed layer for this concept. In this thesis the feasability of AJP for an industrial application of this concept was proved. The AJP technology was thoroughly investigated and improved. An efficient and reliable deposition of narrow and uniform seed layers on rough wafer surfaces is enabled. A model was developed to improve ink deposition and to predict process parameters and line width. Newly designed print heads were developed and manufactured by support of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of two-phase flows. The deposited seed layers were optimized for low electric contact resistance to the emitter and best performance of the silicon solar cells, also for lowly doped next generation emitters.
