Scope The second conference on terahertz research and applications will take place in Villach from September 9th-10th, 2013. The conference follows on from the successful 2011 conference which drew a wide range of contributors from industry and academia. The conference provides a platform for researchers to disseminate their latest results, and for domain experts to highlight novel applications in industry and the life sciences. Researchers and experts from industry will be able to share insights, novel techniques and discuss problems that have arisen with the application of terahertz technology. The conference program includes, but is not limited to, talks on terahertz spectroscopy, tomography, imaging and emission microscopy as well as pilot implementations and potential industrial applications. Technology Terahertz combines the advantages and challenges of both optics and HF electronics. Its unique properties between the infrared and microwaves enable for instance: • spectroscopy for investigating molecules and molecular bonds • tomography to analyse material layers and layer thickness • imaging for industrial inspection of inhomogeneous samples • characterisation of semiconductors and photovoltaic materials Terahertz provides non-destructive 3-dimensional spectroscopic information without the health risks associated with alternative techniques such as x-rays. Applications THz has been shown to be useful for a wide range of applications, such as inspection of finished products or materials, quality control, biomedical imaging and diagnostics, counterfeit detection, characterisation of semiconductors and photovoltaic materials. Terahertz offers capabilities that in many cases cannot be matched by competing technologies, thus making new sensing applications possible.
