Within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria is considered the leading power due to its population size, economic strength and military power. Nigeria's leadership role is particularly evident in regional security policy. What influence does Nigerian domestic policy have on the effectiveness of ECOWAS? This book examines crisis management in West Africa using the example of ECOWAS interventions in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Gambia. The author provides an analytical assessment of military coups, the crisis in Niger, the withdrawal of three states from ECOWAS and the establishment of the Alliance des Etats du Sahel (AES), and explains Nigeria's role in overcoming these challenges.
