Thin strips with a variable thickness across the width can be currently produced by welding together different gauges or by profile rolling. The possibility to produce in a single step a strip with a defined thickness distribution by twin-roll strip casting would open new possibilities for the production of optimized profiles and components. In this thesis, the use of profiled casting rolls is considered to produce tailored strips directly in the solidification step. The main target of this thesis is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the tailor strip casting process and to provide a description of the final strip quality. Based on numerical simulations and experimental verification, process limits and final strip quality are investigated for the steel 1.4301. Furthermore, the possibility to extend the process limits through a local modification of the solidification conditions and to improve the final strip properties by an inline hot rolling step have been investigated.
