The thesis is devoted to the development of new methods for the constructive design and the systematic tuning of passivity-based controllers for both smooth and switched nonlinear systems. The main contributions are: (1) methods for the estimation and enlargement of the domain of attraction; (2) a controller design method for the stabilization of switched nonlinear systems; and (3) conditions for the solvability of the exact output trajectory tracking problem for switched nonlinear systems and methods for the tracking controller design.
