Within this work, a novel simulation method for the amplification of ultrashort laser pulses is presented. The simulation method combines the numerical solution of the photon transport equation with a pure positive time-frequency representation of the ultrashort pulse. This representation is obtained by calculating the smoothed pseudo Wigner distribution, which takes into account the spectral phase and spectral intensity of the respective pulse. In contrast to previous methods, the suggested approach is not limited by initial assumptions that define the spectral intensity in each temporal slice of the pulse. Instead, the approach takes into account the phase dependent amplification, which updates the spectral intensity in each temporal slice, depending on the seeded spectral phase, after each step in space. The comparison of simulated results to experimental measurements demonstrates that the presented approach can be applied to multi-pass amplification systems with high numerical accuracy while giving valuable insights into the amplification dynamics.
