A 3D terahertz imaging system with real-time operation capability has been developed. By combining a sparse multistatic line array with an orthogonal synthetic aperture obtained by the movement of the object under test an equivalent planar aperture is generated with a significant reduction of the system complexity. A novel method for designing sparse multistatic arrays is proposed, which relaxes the Nyquist-criterion. A modification of the range migration algorithm is introduced to make it suitable for the underlying imaging concept. Furthermore, a phase coherence based method is proposed to enhance the imaging quality.
