Nano-bio interactions at the aqueous interface of iron oxide nanoparticles

Low-cost magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles depict all-rounder which can be applied in downstream processing of biomolecules as well as in energy storage, catalysis and medicine due to their superparamagnetic properties. The aim of this work was to tune the particle properties in order to control the interactions with biomolecules selectively. The study has shown that the immobilization of enzymes for catalytic applications is possible on the same particles which are able to form a reversible bond with proteins through distinct peptide sequences. Kostengünstige magnetische Eisenoxidnanopartikel sind Alleskönner, die mit superparamagnetischen Eigenschaften neben der Reinigung von Biomolekülen auch in Energiespeichertechnik, Katalyse sowie in der Medizin eingesetzt werden können. Ziel der Arbeit war es die Eigenschaften der Partikel so zu beeinflussen, dass die Interaktion mit Biomolekülen gezielt gesteuert werden kann. So konnte gezeigt werden, dass auf denselben Partikeln eine Enzymimmobilisierung für katalytische Anwendungen als auch eine reversible Bindung über bestimmte Peptidsequenzen möglich ist.
