Abstract
A novel reference model based flight control architecture with protections enables a decoupling of closed loop dynamics specification from controller design. Decoupling is facilitated by designing a reference model based on functional and handling qualities requirements. New protection algorithms using dynamic inversion and phase plane limitations are applied to the reference model, assisting non-conservative full envelope exploitation. A tracking controller is designed to keep the closed-loop dynamics within tight bounds around the specified reference behavior.
