This thesis addresses aspects for electrification of safety-critical airborne systems. It proposes a fault-tolerant positioning system for a helicopter swashplate comprising four electromechanical actuators and relying on autonomous failure detection, isolation and reconfiguration. Compliance is shown for a set of requirements encompassing operational performance and fault-tolerance as well as safety and reliability. The applied control approach eliminates the internal force fighting problem of the over-determined kinematics. A methodology is designed to evaluate feedback of various types of sensors for monitoring and autonomous reconfiguration of faulted components. The system is trained for the detection of a set of credible failures and is capable of executing three types of resulting failure accommodations, namely exclusion of erroneous sensor signals, shutdown of electric drives and mechanical decoupling of a jammed mechanical drive path. The conceptual design is verified by means of a simulation test campaign.
