The performance of outdoor insulators is a key factor determining the reliability of power delivery systems. The dynamic properties of hydrophobicity, in particular the transfer of hydrophobicity onto adhering pollution layers, are vital for the performance of polymeric insulating materials in high voltage outdoor applications. This thesis contributes to the development of suitable test methods for evaluating the retention, the recovery, and above all the transfer of hydrophobicity. For the latter the Hydrophobicity Transfer Test (HTT) is proposed as a suitable test method for standardisation, allowing a reproducible classification of relevant high voltage insulating materials into four Hydrophobicity Transfer Classes (HTCs). The underlying migration processes of mobile polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molecules are investigated by infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography. The results provide a deeper insight into the true nature of different migrating PDMS molecules.
