Beschreibung

Comparative climatology of terrestrial planets is a subject of high impact for many researchers nowadays. Atmospheric thermal properties of different altitude layers of terrestrial planets can be deduced from pressure-broadened molecular transition features. Ground-based heterodyne spectroscopy is used to observe the nightside of Venus and the dayside of Mars by probing single pressure-broadened CO2 absorption lines in the mid-infrared wavelength region at around 10µm. Observations were carried out at different telescopes in Arizona and Hawaii, using the Cologne spectrometer THIS or NASA's HIPWAC. The retrieval of vertical temperature profiles from those observations is reported for the first time.
