Invasive electrodes for neural stimulation require low impedance, high charge injection and biocompatibility in order to reach the miniaturization of the devices and long-term implantation in biomedical applications. The aim of this study is to improve the electrical and biocompatibility properties of the electrodes by introducing the organic conductive material poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as electrode coat. This organic conductive polymer demonstrated superior electrical properties as interface for invasive electrodes than metallic electrodes. The polymerization conditions of the monomer (EDOT) were evaluated to achieve the optimal electrode coat in an aqueous micellar dispersion. The structuration of PEDOT in the shape of nanotubes, nanowires and nanoporous aerogel was realized by using template techniques. Furthermore, PEDOT, PEDOT collagen, PEDOT nanostructures and PEDOT aerogel have evidenced non-cytotoxic effects according to the ISO 10993-5.
