The growing global demand for raw materials forces the development, production and distribution of resources under extreme climatic and geographic conditions (temperature, wind, waves, water depth and ice). The basically new solutions that are necessary for an economic and environmental friendly operation are provided by the companies and research institutes of the Alliance P.O.L.A.R. (Production, Operation and Living in Arctic Regions).Based on the core competences and the recognized market positions of the parties, system solutions in the following areas have been and will be developed: Ships and offshore Structures, LNG equipment, Living quarters.The purpose of this conference should be the presentation of the results achieved so far to the general public and to bring the developed competences in an overall context.The conference shows that it is worth to study the mentioned problems and it has already been achieved a lot. It shows also that a number of questions are still unresolved, and that the companies and research institutions that are active in this field, still need to go a long way.
