Beschreibung

L’auteur montre comment Rousseau et Hegel ont contribué à façonner la modernité en affrontant, souvent à rebours de leur époque, les enjeux complexes de la rationalité politique, notamment ceux relatifs à l’universalité de l’État.
The author shows how Rousseau and Hegel helped shape modernity by grappling—often at odds with their times—with the complex issues of political rationality, particularly those relating to the universality of the state. The book emphasizes that, while their ideas have stood the test of time, this is not because they are infallible, but because they remain a fertile source for renewing contemporary political thought. The work highlights their conception of the state as an ethical totality, or “moral self,” and identifies two fundamental principles: becoming-subject and becoming-free. The author explains that the rational state results from the reconciliation of these two dynamics. He argues, however, that only democracy—understood as a community founded on natural rights—can concretely achieve this synthesis. The book also addresses the state as a self-aware historical community, whose effectiveness rests on the will and freedom of individuals. From this perspective, the author develops a constructivist approach aimed at conceiving a political modernity free from historicism. He asserts that subjective human reason must be able to ground legislation and that the state arises from collective action rather than from an abstract necessity. Finally, the book presents politics as an ongoing collective endeavor, embedded in a continuous process of historical construction.
