Requirements for an ambient interior lighting system for motor vehicles

Modern motor vehicles often have an interior lighting system that is switched on during night-time driving. This is intended to provide a pleasant atmosphere for the driver on one hand; while on the other hand it allows the passengers within the vehicle to orientate themselves. The topic of this thesis is the definition of optimised and maximum luminances, that should not be exceeded in night-time traffic in the interior design of a vehicle. The described experiments were conducted both in laboratory and in real traffic. Based on these experiments a method was derived that allows to assess both, existing lighting systems and systems that are under development.
