About the book:
Indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest are often in the focus of international interests. This publication deals with the development of indigenous societies in the State of Pernambuco. The main problems these societies face are the increasing pressure for land from outside the indigenous societies, their small connection to the monetary system and markets, a closed traditional society with an educational system coming from outside and a certain crises of tribal identity. Three different indigenous groups (ethnic societies) - Kambiwá, Fulni-ô and Xukuru - have been selected which differ in their ecological and economic environment and hence, show different relations to the outside world and economic development.
This book attempts to analyze the socio-economic development of indigenous people in an changing environment and to assess the future potential for a sustainable socio-economic development in the frame of the cultural settings. The specific objectives are (1) to understand and explain the relations between resource availability and use, as well as the living standard of indigenous families in different ethnic groups; (2) to assess the economic efficiency of resource use and define the development potential of resources under sustainability conditions; (3) to determine the factors affecting decision-making about resource use of indigenous families and the degree of flexibility in decision-making about resource use at the family level; and (4) to estimate and simulate the future development of different indigenous groups and different farming systems of them in order to assess the impacts of future strategies on farming activities and on the living standard of indigenous families.
The impact analysis includes the measuring of future strategies in multi-periodical (dynamic) linear programming models at family level. The results indicate that investment in irrigation infrastructure is an effective way to avoid continuous decreasing on indigenous living standard and farm income and to force indigenous family member outside their traditional location. Improved credit conditions to indigenous characteristics are necessary as a tool to improve farm production and, consequently, family income. Basic services, as health and education, must be improved and adapted to indigenous tradition and characteristics.
