Hard core dictators are growing nervous about Mary's Magnificat which is fast becoming the anthem of the oppressed and millions of famine stricken peoples. To ensure a proper understanding of the canticle, embodying the central theme of Luke-Acts, the present study makes a thoroughgoing analysis of the Magnificat with the help of the historico-critical method as well as the most modern techniques of exegesis. A concluding chapter shows how the Magnificat could be used as a point of departure for a positive and constructive theology of liberation in the midst of peoples still politically, economically, socially and culturally enslaved.
