Art Deco, a decorative style also popular in the commercial building field in New York in the '20's and '30's, had a consequential influence on America's most spectacular definition of space: the skyscraper. Examined are such aspects of skyscrapers as ornament, decoration, symbolism, eclecticism, historicism, and iconography against both the background of the modernist esthetic and the decorative tradition in architecture.
