Beschreibung

The author shows on his personal and his professional life story the development of a person and of an analyst. His idea all through life was always to look at himself as if he was his own favorite patient - and at his patients as if they were himself, or at least parts of himself. This development is traced through childhood, medical school, marriage, emigration, war experience, and finally through the life of an analyst in Beverly Hills, Southern California, USA. The story is told with humor, illustrated by approximately 50 drawings by the author himself. He shows his increasing insight, his understanding for himself and others; his deepening maturation as a person and simultaneously as a therapist.

Stimmen zu »My Favorite Patient«

«Read this slim, red-covered chronicle to enjoy, to share, and to learn from this graceful philosopher-analyst who has fashioned as his hallmark a frank, personal, and utterly disarming illustrated autobiography.» (S.L.P., Bulletin of the Southern California, Psychoanalytic Institute and Society) «Livre vivant d'un homme bien vivant, livre débordant de jeunesse d'un vieil homme qui se sait au bord de la mort mais accepte de laisser parler l'enfant qui joue toujours en lui.» (Alain de Mijolla, Association Internationale d'Histoire de la Psychoanalyse)
«I would recommend it highly for those who still stand in awe before the temple of psychoanalysis. Grotjahn will bring you down to earth. You will love his cartoons, his frankness, and his sense of humor.» (Peter Ostwald, American Journal of Psychotherapy)
«Das Buch des inzwischen 84-jährigen Altmeisters der Psychoanalyse gehört zu dem Lesenswertesten, vornehmlich für einen Psychoanalytiker, der letzten Jahre. ... es zeigt einzigartig, wie Psychoanalyse und Leben wirklich ernstgenommen werden.» (Theodor F.Hau, Zeitschrift für Psychosomatische Medizin und Psychoanalyse)
«This is a very original biography, in some ways infuriating, in many ways enlightening and charming.» (Dannis Brown, Group Analysis)
«This book is an odyssey that traverses continents, oceans, languages, different eras, wellknown analytic collegues and the peripatetic reflections of an everyoung octogenarian. ... 'My favorite Patient' unreels like a magical train ride through a beautiful countryside, memorable and delightful, and leaves one wishing there were more.» (R.T.Fintzy, Southern California Psychiatric Society Bulletin) «What Grotjahn gives us is a rarely-seen chance to look into the life history of a prominent analyst.» (Samuel Eisenstein, Academy Forum)
