Advances in the mechanical capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), flight computers and battery technology have prompted a strong and ongoing interest in UAV applications for many years. Among the proposed applications is the inspection of infrastructure, environmental sensing, precision agriculture and most importantly the on-demand delivery of goods. It is expected that these applications will produce dense large-scale UAV deployments especially in urban areas. But before this vision can become a reality it is crucial to establish an unmanned aerial system traffic management (UTM) system that allows for the safe and reliable operation of UAVs.
While the design of an UTM is a challenging interdisciplinary effort involving experts from, avionics, logistics, city planning, cyber-security, and many more disciplines, the establishment of a communication architecture for UTM plays a prominent role. In this thesis an ad-hoc network is proposed as the underlying communication system to facilitate important UTM use-cases such as collision avoidance and airspace monitoring. In particular, the network allows for the efficient, timely and reliable dissemination of position reports in large-scale urban UAV networks using a tailor-made flooding protocol called Rate Decay Flooding (RDF). Evaluated on an average UAV density expected for major German cities, RDF supports twice the network size compared to conventional protocols. Beyond that a mathematical model, as well as protocol extensions using reinforcement learning and network coding are introduced.
The proposed communication architecture together with the RDF protocol family represents a comprehensive proposal to solve the communication challenges of future UTM systems.
