In this booklet, the author and translator Milena Rampoldi of ProMosaik LAPH introduces an important forgotten epoch of the history of Futa Toro, characterised by Muslim abolitionism.
In this booklet, the author and translator Milena Rampoldi of ProMosaik LAPH introduces an important forgotten epoch of the history of Futa Toro, characterised by Muslim abolitionism implemented by two Almami. The first was Ceerno Suleyman Baal (1769-1776) who opposed slavery and slave-trade in the Torodo Revolution. In 1776, Abdul Kader Kane followed him and was then killed in 1807 by his opponents who re-established slavery. In the author’s opinion, in this movement there is a challenging fluidity between reformism and revolution. It is an important period of Muslim history characterised by a strong leadership struggling for justice and the abolition of slavery in the name of Islamic egalitarianism. This model may be applied today in Mauritania, the last stronghold of Muslim slavery, to eradicate slavery. A fundamental subject-matter which can be analysed starting from this epoch is also related to the ethical principles of leadership in Muslim history and socio-political practice.

Dr. Phil. Milena Rampoldi, 1973 in Bozen geboren, studierte in Italien Theologie, Pädagogik, Philosophie und Orientalistik, um dann in Wien zum Thema der arabophonen Korandidaktik im deutschen Sprachraum zu promovieren. Sie arbeitete als Fremdsprachlehrerin . 2014 gründete sich den Verein ProMosaik e.V. für die interkulturelle Kommunikation (www.promosaik.com). Die Themen ihrer Bücher beziehen sich im Beson-deren auf die islamische Religion, Kultur und Geschichte und auf den islamischen Feminismus und die Menschenrechte. Sie verfolgt mit ihren Texten das Ziel des Dialogs zwischen den Religionen und ist der Überzeugung, dass man durch die Annäherung an die Geschichte auch die Gegenwart besser verstehen kann, um eine Zukunft im Sinne der Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens aufbauen zu können.
