This dissertation explores the application of iterative new product development methodologies within the hardware industry. Iterative work, characterized by repeated cycles of design, testing, and refinement, is analyzed in its critical interplay with formal planning, emphasizing their combined role in achieving high development flexibility. Furthermore, this work characterizes optimal iteration frequencies and examines the key factors influencing them.

Timo Kalmes holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on Supply Chain Management from the University of Cologne, including an exchange semester at Durham University Business School. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Cologne. During his Ph.D. studies at the University of Cologne, he conducted mixed-method research on iterative new product development in the hardware industry, integrating quantitative modeling with empirical insights to enhance the depth and applicability of his findings.
