The Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (Fraunhofer ISI) in conjunction with the Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW), University of Karlsruhe was organising the Seventh International S&T Indicators Conference from 25 to 28 September 2002 in Karlsruhe, Germany. Previous conferences have been held in Leiden (1988), Bielefeld (1990), Leiden (1991), Antwerp (1995), Cambridge(1998) and Leiden (2000). Since its origins in 1988, the conference has developed to one of the most important international symposia on advanced S&T indicators. The focus of this years conference was on the following main themes: Trends and challenges in the development of novel, advanced S&T Indicators; Validity and adequacy of S&T indicators; Indicators reflecting modes of knowledge production; Combination and integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches; S&T Indicators for the assessment of policy effects.
