Many complex and interacting pathways regulate nervous system function, not only under normal conditions, but also under the even more complex and challenging states that arise following CNS injury or disease. This special issue explores the signalling pathways and mechanisms that regulate neural differentiation from stem cells and neuronal and myelinating cell function. It also summarises how this knowledge may potentially be exploited for treatment of neural damage and mental illness, including analyses of the roles of lysophospholipids, BMPs, TAM and muscarinic receptors, neurotrophins and PCTAIRE kinases in neural health and damage. Special features include the comparison of embryonic and stem cells in a neural context and a practical review and guide to how to gain the most benefit from transcriptome analyses in the study of neural regeneration. This publication will be useful and thought-provoking for all those with an interest in signalling pathways. It explores multiple systems that play a role in neural health and disease, exposes gaps in current knowledge, and shows directions for future research.
