Guidelines for Transfusion of Erythrocytes Containing Sickle Hemoglobin

Beschreibung

Circumstances under which blood from donors with sickle cell trait should be avoided have not been clearly delineated because evidence from controlled studies is lacking. AABB standards require each transfusion service to establish a policy that describes when to avoid transfusion of sickle cell trait erythrocyte. This Guideline reviews the various recommendations being made in the absence of controlled studies, and critically examines the basis for them.
