In 1525, a fire devastated the old abbey church of St Hubert. When it was rebuilt, not only was a larger and more lavishly furnished church designed, but also a sanctuary that was to receive numerous pilgrims who venerated St Hubert. In keeping with the abbey's political and economic connections, the style of the church was influenced by the fact that the routes from Brussels to Luxembourg and from Reims to Liège intersected here – so it shows similarities to the Gothic style of Brabant or Liège. Today, the impressive basilica attracts numerous visitors.
