Stratos und Stratiké

The fourth volume of the «Akarnanien-Forschungen» is dedicated to different aspects of ceramic research. It presents examples of selected pottery from the Archaic to Hellenistic periods from two important find complexes in Stratos and the Stratiké. The finds from the so-called ‘pottery waste’ complex on the Agora of Stratos are examined from a ceramic-technological perspective, whereas the finds from the sanctuary at Spathari (Stratiké) are considered with regard to their cultic-sacral context. In addition, new considerations on the current research of pottery products in Acarnania are presented. One contribution discusses the concept of the diagnosticity of pottery, through which the various levels of ceramic analysis can be considered more adequately. The problem of managing large quantities of pottery found during excavations and surveys is also discussed. Due to the sheer volume of such finds, processing them requires its own analytical strategies. In a further contribution, methodological approaches are proposed for the future processing of large quantities of clay roof tiles, which have recently been the focus of increasing archaeological investigations.
