Friedrich Nicolai (1732–1811) was one of the most important figures of intellectual life in Germany between 1760 and 1810. He was highly regarded by his contemporaries as a publisher, bookseller, critic and writer, and widely read, but also very often attacked by dissenters, primarily by the younger generation of the literary avant-garde. This edition documents the author and his reception in texts, letters, documents and detailed commentaries.
