The author uses the IT sector as an example to describe how working and learning tasks can contribute to the development of specific competencies and how this leaning method can be integrated into working and learning structures within companies. The present concept for vocational further education has been tested and empirically analysed within the framework of the research and development project ITAQU. The results of the analysis provide personnel developers as well as vocational education scientists and students with ideas which are also applicable to different industries.
