The subsequent analysis provides a few formal considerations regarding the so-called “span of control”.
The analysis provides a few formal considerations regarding the so-called “span of control”.
Assuming the same span of control level at each level of the hierarchy, from a formal perspective, two aspects are of particular interest.
First, how does the depth of the organizational structure depend on the span of control and the total number of employees (members)?
Second, how does the span of control and the total number of employees (members) influence the "utilization" at the lowest hierarchical level?
"Utilization" in this context is intended to mean the number of members at the lowest hierarchical level relative to the theoretical formal maximum membership on this level.
