This is the first detailed study of Pakistani English (PE). PE is a non-native variety of English with certain distinctive features of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar which are different from such native varieties of English as have been standardized in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The monograph also describes the various sub-varieties of PE in terms of the degree of their deviation from British Standard English which is used as the norm of comparison in Pakistan though, as this work indicates, the distance from this aspirational norm is a matter of socio-economic class, level of exposure to English and other such variables. The monograph is of interest for sociolinguists, educators, teachers of English, travelers and tourists to South Asia, interpreters, writers, media persons and ordinary readers.

In 1987, he became professor and head of the English Department in the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Muzaffarabad where he introduced linguistics. In 1989, he also got an M.Litt in linguistics from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. In 1990, he joined the National Institute of Pakistan Studies. Dr. Rahman was made distinguished national professor for life in 2004 tenured professor in 2007. He joined the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan in 2011 as Dean of the School of Education. In September 2014 he was appointed as the Dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences by the same university . He has been Academic Visitor at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and is Ordinary Member of Common Room (subject to rules) at the same college.
