This dissertation discusses application characteristics and mitigation strategies in the context of a novel approach to interactive, distributed, large-scale simulation systems.
Existing distributed simulation architectures tend to strictly favor either consistency or availability with little regard to the other. This dissertation introduces a novel approach to realizing interactive, highly available simulation grids, focusing both on scalability and eventual consistency. By enforcing spatial coordinates and a strict area of influence for every model component, specialized maps can be utilized to measure the expanding influence of faults onto simulation model components over time, without explicit knowledge of the correct state. Benefiting recovery mechanics are discussed, including localized rollback, state merging, and probabilistic classification. A formal foundation is established to define the simulation processes and determine provable guarantees as a result of basic requirements and properties of the introduced mechanics. Various statistical measurements are presented to estimate effectiveness and impact of alternative approaches.

Stefan Elsen
Stefan Elsen is a software architect and engineer, and was a researcher at the Distributed Systems Group of Trier University in Germany for six years. During his studies, he evaluated parallelization and distribution of interactive, real time simulation mechanics and their impact on the model and the user. He is interested in the effects of faults and delays in massively large computation grids and their potential mitigation strategies. Of particular interest are the characteristics of propagating inconsistency, limitations that the scenario inherently imposes, and the possibilities, system and model designers still have, to make the most of such scenarios.
