Beschreibung

Analyzing participatory pathways for mathematical programming of smallholder land-use decisions, looking into the case of Acrocomia spp. and soy in South-East Paraguay
Analyzing smallholders’ land-use decisions in the context of climatic changes, price volatility, the adoption of new technologies and policy changes is pivotal for developing strategies to safeguard smallholders’ investments as well as improve the resilience of their livelihoods. Farm-level simulation modeling has emerged as an ideal research tool in this respect. Applying Whole-Farm Mathematical Programming (WFMP) in a participatory setting, which would help to improve farm-level decision-making, however, has so far always been hampered by technological constraints, such as limited computational resources and solving power. This dissertation, develops, tests and discusses the applicability of a novel participatory whole-farm modeling approach, based on advances in information and communication technology. In times of transition to a global bioeconomy, the dissertation exploits the extended interactive modeling features of the agent-based bio-economic simulation package MPMAS, and tests new land use strategies of smallholders in the South of Paraguay related to the potentials of minor crops. Guided by the iterative exploratory and participatory simulation approach, the thesis examines the land-use strategies of planting soy, the minor crop Acrocomia spp., and integrated agricultural production systems that incorporate Acrocomia.
