Gomez’s paintings show the places where economic precarity is at its mostlegible and visible. Fusing the visual techniques of artifice, illusionism, andtrompe l'oeil, he mobilizes a contemporary dialectic of realism that makes economic destruction more real than the truth-value of the photographic image.(...) Gomez invites the viewer to a contest of discernment in which economic destruction can be recognized and the civic duty to distinguish truth from fiction might be reconstructed.
