Jovanović's poems take the reader from the outer into the inner world of a Rom, who, after 40 years in exile in Austria, faces his approaching death, partly with light irony.
In this his second volume of poetry in English translation - the first appeared under the title "News from the Other World," Francis-Boutle Publishers, London, 2010, the Roma poet, Ilija Jovanović, who grew up in Serbia, deals with the marginalization of the Roma, and with their loss of bonds and language in exile. He philosophizes about life and about his death, which is imminent. Even in his most tender love poetry Jovanović demonstrates the metaphorical possibilities of his mother tongue. The inner wealth of the poet’s experience, despite all the tragedy, permeates and penetrates all these poems supporting him through even this the most difficult phase of his life. - The poems are available in two languages, in English translation and in the original, the Gurbet Romanes. A true treasure for all lovers of lyric and language.

Ilija Jovanović
Ilija Jovanović was born in 1950 in Serbia, in a village near Belgrade. In 1971 he moved to Vienna, where he worked as an immigrant worker. Later he began to write. He became secretary general, head of cultural affairs and chairman of the „Romano Centro“, an association for Romanies in Vienna. Jovanović was awarded the Theodor-Körner prize, the Bundesehrenzeichen for his work in the field of Intercultural dialogue, and the prize for Exil-Lyrik.
