The continuous supply of electric power is a backbone of modern society. Whereas interconnected electric power systems are typically operated without interruption and never intentionally shut down, blackouts cannot completely be ruled out. Embedded in a discussion of power system resilience and the role of power system restoration, this thesis investigates the impact of distributed renewables, their interaction with control modes of conventional generation and control strategies at the operator level. Focussing on the behavior of generation and load currently already in place, feasibility and limitations of restoration schemes including renewable generation are investigated in realistic example cases. This thesis includes contributions on the improvement of simulation models, the determination of parameters based on measurement data, schemes to utilize the existing features of renewable generation for distribution-level island grids and sensitivity studies with respect to the influence of the choice of model and parameters. The impact of model choices regarding cold load pickup (CLPU) is highlighted and parameters derived from measurements of actual outages are provided.
