The Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (BWG) is a traditional scientific society, in which the interaction between natural and technical sciences and humanities is cultivated. The yearbook 2020 of the BWG provides an overview of the activities of the society, its research projects and lectures and scientific treatises by members and invited scientists.
Outstanding events in 2020 include the awarding of the Gauß Medal to Nobel Prize winner Emmanuelle Charpentier, the bioethics symposium on “Possibilities and limits of gene therapy with gene scissors” and a panel discussion “Possibilities and limits of big data in the research". Another highlight are the results of the BWG commission “Synergy and Intelligence” on the question “Can machines learn ethical behavior?” A new concept for an ethical Turing test was developed here.
The range of contributions reflects the diversity of current scientific research in an interdisciplinary context.
