Non-state Regulatory Regimes

Regulation can appear under multiple forms. The purpose of Non-state regulatory regimes is to approach those forms of regulation that are different from state regulation or non-state regulatory regimes. To take the reader through the issues raised by these regimes, the study is cross-disciplinary encompassing various perspectives be they legal, political, international relations', economic, or sociological. The role of institutions, of regulatory strategies and theoretical approaches is outlined. Departing from the review of state regulatory policies, the focus is then enlarged to seize the emergence of these regimes and to discuss concrete cases. The characteristics of these regimes are examined based upon the issues of fragmentation and standardization. The concept of non-state regulatory regimes can be summarized as both an issue of governance and of shifting the balance between the following key institutions: the state and the market actors within civil society, and their representative organizations.
